Modern Foreign Languages

Vision for MFL at RPNS

At RPNS, we believe that learning another language gives children a new and broader perspective on the world. It provides an opening to other cultures, reinforces school values such as respect, and links with our PSHE curriculum and Thrive Time.

We aim to ensure that children receive high quality MFL teaching as early as possible and, although non statutory in KS1, French is taught to all children from Year 1. This helps to develop communication skills (in speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar) and children’s knowledge of language.

Using stories, songs and games, children cover a range of topics including: all about me, food, family and friends, school, shopping, time, holidays and hobbies. In accordance with the National Curriculum, we aim to provide the foundation for learning further languages, and inspire pupils to learn about other countries.
